Pressestimmen
A gripping, atmospheric, heart-breaking, almost-ghost story. Not since Stephen King's Overlook has a hotel hiding a secret been brought to such vivid life.--Lydia Kiesling, author of THE GOLDEN STATEThe Hotel Neversink is an astounding literary feat--a murder mystery, a ghost story, a century-spanning family history, and a standup routine all in one, with dramatic variety to rival any Catskills floor show. Adam O'Fallon Price writes with the blackly comic energy of Philip Roth or Lorrie Moore, packing ten novels' worth of narrative into this compact knish of a book. I wolfed it down in a couple of bites.--J. Robert Lennon, author of BROKEN RIVERPrice is a sharp writer, and his novel wonderfully critiques family obligation while simultaneously delivering a crafty, sinister whodunit. The storytelling structure that Price has constructed will leave the reader slackjawed and eager to reread.Price takes big risks that allow him to perform dizzying feats.

'The Hotel Neversink" is the story of a Catskills resort, it's people, and it's history as told in a series of short stories. The stories are written in the voices of various family members, hotel guests and staff, and once, in a group voice. The author, Adam O'Fallon Price has written a family saga by way of a murder mystery, and the book is a gem.Other books have been written in this short-story style. for example, Elizabeth Strout's "Olive Kitteridge" two-book set. It's an interesting method to read a book; I'd say you could pick up the book, read a story or two, and put it down for next time you have some free time. But "The Hotel Neversink" is such a compelling read in Adam O'Fallon Price deft hands, that chances are you'll want to read it all in one sitting. The book begins with an Eastern European Jewish family enduring hard times in Silesia in the 1920's. Somehow the family makes it to the United States and some propitious lending by more affluent family members allow the Sikorsky family to buy a huge old hotel and turn it into the Hotel Neversink. (Get it?). The hotel took off and did well, as many others in the Catskill region did. They attracted Jewish families and groups, who found the Catskills, with the relative nearness to New York City, an attractive place to spend the summer. The family ran the resort - through economic ups and downs - and the disappearance of several children. There was a "question" about the resort but the guests came...til they didn't and the Neversink began its long, downward "sinking".Price's novel is not a long one, only 297 pages, but he manages to introduce about 10 characters, in whose voices the book is written. All his characters are interesting and none are caricatures, which they easily could have been. "The Hotel Neversink" will definitely make my ten best for this year!!!
Adam O’Fallon Price’s novel THE HOTEL NEVERSINK is not some super scary Stephen Kingish (no disrespect) novel as some have made it out to be. Yes, there is a hotel involved and indeed there is a mystery that weaves a bit of fright into the book. But it has its own unique style. A masterfully told story about a Jewish family spanning three generations, which has poured its heart and soul into creating a successful hotel in the Catskills in the 1930s, and about the disappearance of a young boy. It's impossible not to be drawn into both O’Fallon Price’s exquisite writing and to the steeped in time, richly created characters, as much as you will be to Neversink.THE HOTEL NEVERSINK took me by total surprise, which is exactly how I like my books.
Don’t let the comparison to The Shining fool you, this book reads nothing like the Stephen King horror, but that’s not a bad thing by any stretch.I went into this book a bit wary about the whole “changing narrators throughout the history of the hotel†setup, but it actually ended up being easy to follow (chapters go in chronological order, and characters are easy to keep straight). I never really tired of any particular character, and aside from the last couple of viewpoints (that didn’t take place at the hotel), I never lost interest in who or what I was reading about, if anything, I sometimes wished I could have spent more time with a particular character in a particular year. While it wasn’t a horror novel or a thriller, there were certainly sections that gave me goosebumps due to the utter eeriness of what was happening, but I was surprised at how involved I was with these characters and this hotel even when nothing “exciting†was happening. If this were a movie, I might rate it PG-13, maybe a soft R for those who are extra sensitive to sexual content. There not much in the way of swearing, and nothing is overly graphically described. The sexual content is less about being titillating and more about character development. While nothing was overly descriptive and graphic, it was more detailed than just simply implied “fade to black†type stuff.Basically this book is one part a family’s history running a hotel, one part murder mystery. Both were equally fascinating. I predicted the ending correctly, and it did leave me with a few questions, but overall I really enjoyed this novel and I look forward to rereading it with the knowledge that the ending provided.
The characters are interesting and eccentric and the story itself is fascinating, but it's all in the way this story is told that dazzles the reader. Adam O'Fallon Price is a masterful storyteller! This is a history of The Hotel Neversink, from 1931 to 2012, told chronologically (with flashbacks) through different characters. Eventually the corpse of a missing boy is found in the basement of the Neversink Hotel. Once having turned a million dollar profit, by 1988 the hotel is deteriorating, largely due to the death of the boy and several other children who have gone missing over the years. And then there's the curious case of Noah who tells his parents that he's being strangled at night only to have them brush his revelation off as sleep paralysis. This reader suspected one hotel employee or another and never guessed correctly until the big reveal toward the end, though it had been outlined earlier. At times droll, always suspenseful, with many literary references (and a nod to Christopher Durang's absurd comedy), this dark tragicomedy is one of my favorite books this year.
